"Facet joint" is a term used in anatomy, particularly in the context of the spine. It refers to the joints between the vertebrae of the spinal column, which are called facet joints or zygapophyseal joints. These joints are located on the posterior (back) aspect of the vertebral column and are responsible for the slight amount of movement allowed between the vertebrae, as well as for providing stability to the spine.

Each facet joint is formed by the articulation of two facets: a superior facet on one vertebra that fits into an inferior facet on the vertebra below it. The superior facets face inferiorly and the inferior facets face superiorly, allowing for the stacked nature of the vertebrae and the flexibility of the spine.

Facet joints are synovial joints, which means they are surrounded by a synovial membrane that produces a lubricating fluid to reduce friction between the articulating surfaces. This allows for smoother movement of the vertebrae relative to each other.

Facet joints can become a source of pain or dysfunction, particularly in conditions such as osteoarthritis, where the cartilage that covers the articulating surfaces of the facets wears down, leading to pain and stiffness. In such cases, treatments may include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections into the joint, or, in severe cases, surgical intervention.
