"Acute care" is a term used in the medical field to describe a level of care that is provided for patients who have severe or critical medical conditions that require immediate attention and treatment. Acute care is typically provided in settings such as emergency departments, intensive care units (ICUs), and acute care hospitals.

Patients who receive acute care may have a wide range of conditions, including heart attacks, strokes, severe infections, trauma, and other life-threatening emergencies. The goal of acute care is to stabilize the patient, provide life-saving interventions, and prevent the progression of the illness or injury.

Acute care services may include emergency surgery, medical treatments, diagnostic testing, and ongoing monitoring and support to ensure the patient's condition does not deteriorate. Once the patient is stable and no longer requires immediate life-saving interventions, they may be transferred to a lower level of care, such as a rehabilitation facility or a regular hospital room, for further treatment and recovery.
