Ukiyo意思

"Ukiyo" is a Japanese term that means "floating world." It refers to the urban lifestyle, especially the pleasure-seeking aspects of Edo-period Japanese society (1603-1868). The term is most commonly associated with the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints and paintings that flourished during this time, which often depicted scenes from everyday life, landscapes, and particularly the lives of the courtesans and geisha of the pleasure districts.

The "floating world" concept captures the idea that life is fleeting and transient, and that one should enjoy the pleasures of the moment, such as the beauty of art, the company of friends, and the pleasures of the senses. This perspective is closely associated with the aesthetic of mono no aware, which emphasizes the bittersweet beauty of impermanence.
