"Pneumothorax" is a medical term that refers to the presence of air in the pleural space, which is the thin layer of tissue that separates the lungs from the chest wall. This can cause the lung on the affected side to collapse partially or completely. Pneumothorax can occur spontaneously, as a result of trauma, or due to medical procedures. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent complications such as low oxygen levels, respiratory failure, and, in severe cases, death. Treatment typically involves inserting a needle or tube into the chest to remove the air and reinflate the lung, a procedure known as needle aspiration or chest tube insertion.
