Low relief意思
"Low relief" is a term used in art and architecture to describe a type of sculpture where the elements stand out from the background surface at low or shallow levels. In low relief, also known as bas-relief, the sculpted elements typically do not project more than half of their depth from the background. This means that if an object or figure is carved into a surface, it will only protrude a short distance from the flat background, creating a three-dimensional effect but still allowing the artwork to be viewed from the front as a shallow image.
Low relief is often contrasted with high relief, where the elements project more significantly from the background, sometimes almost fully detached from the surface. It is also different from intaglio, where the design is carved into the surface, creating recesses rather than protrusions.
Low relief sculptures can be found in various contexts, including architectural decorations, such as on the facades of buildings, in tombstones, and as standalone artworks. They are often used to tell stories or depict scenes, and the shallow depth allows for a wider field of view, making it easier for viewers to see the entire composition without having to stand in a specific spot.
