"Diradical O2" is a term that describes the oxygen molecule (O2) in its excited state, where two unpaired electrons are present. In the ground state, oxygen is a diatomic molecule with a double bond between the two oxygen atoms, resulting in a total of two electrons in bonding molecular orbitals and two electrons in antibonding molecular orbitals. This ground state configuration gives O2 a triplet electronic state, denoted as 3Σg-.
