Copy number意思
"Copy number" is a term used in genetics and molecular biology to refer to the number of copies of a particular DNA sequence or region within a cell or organism. This term is often used in the context of genetic testing or analysis to describe the number of times a particular gene or segment of DNA is present.
For example, in humans, most genes are present in two copies (one from each parent) because we have two sets of chromosomes. However, some genes or regions of the genome may be present in a different number of copies due to genetic mutations, copy number variations, or other genetic abnormalities.
Copy number can be important in understanding the function of genes and the causes of genetic diseases. For example, having too many or too few copies of a gene can lead to genetic disorders or abnormalities. Copy number variations (CNVs) are also being increasingly recognized as a source of genetic variation between individuals, and may play a role in the predisposition to certain diseases or traits.
