Codon usage refers to the frequency of occurrence of particular codons in a genome, a transcriptome, or a proteome. A codon is a sequence of three nucleotides that corresponds to a specific amino acid or stop signal in the genetic code. Codon usage bias is the non-random use of codons to encode the same amino acid.
