Brush border意思

"Brush border" is a term used in anatomy and cell biology to describe a specialized structure found on the surface of certain cells, particularly those in the small intestine. This structure is characterized by numerous microvilli, which are tiny, finger-like projections that extend from the cell membrane. The term "brush border" comes from the appearance of these microvilli, which, when viewed under a microscope, resemble a brush due to their dense and parallel arrangement.

The brush border is primarily involved in the absorption of nutrients from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. The microvilli increase the surface area of the cell, which enhances the efficiency of nutrient absorption. Cells with a brush border include the enterocytes that line the small intestine, as well as some cells in the kidney and the choroid plexus of the brain.
