"Asian glow" or "Asian flush" is a term used to describe the reddening of the face and sometimes other parts of the body due to alcohol consumption. It is more common in people of East Asian descent, particularly those of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ancestry. The condition is caused by an inherited deficiency in an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), which is involved in the metabolism of alcohol.

When people with this deficiency drink alcohol, the body is unable to process it efficiently, leading to the buildup of a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a known carcinogen and is responsible for the flushing reaction, which can also include symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, nausea, and headache.

Asian glow is not a serious health condition, but it can be uncomfortable and may discourage people from drinking alcohol. Some people with Asian glow choose to avoid alcohol altogether or limit their consumption to minimize symptoms.
